A DECADE IN NEW YORK

The Subject Isn't The Problem. The French Is.

Your child doesn’t need to learn French. They do that every day at school. What they need is someone who can help them keep up with a curriculum that happens to be in French — and honestly, that’s a completely different problem from learning the language.

We hear it all the time. A parent calls and says, “She’s great at math, but the teacher explains everything in French and she can’t keep up.” Or: “He gets the science, but when he has to write it up in French, he shuts down.” Sometimes it’s a 4-year-old in maternelle who needs early math and discovery activities in French. Sometimes it’s a 17-year-old in terminale staring down the Bac. The ages are different, but the issue is the same: the subject isn’t the problem. The gap between what they know and what they can do in French under pressure — that’s the problem.

We close that gap. If you’re looking for a math tutor in French, a science tutor, or a French school tutor who actually knows the curriculum — that’s us. Whether you’d call it cours particuliers, aide aux devoirs, or finding the right tuteur en français for your child’s school — not French as a subject, but every subject, in French. Students from maternelle through terminale.

STUDENT PATHWAYS

Who This Is For

Specialized academic subject tutoring built around the specific realities of French-medium education.

A few weeks out

Students at French Schools in the US and Abroad

If your child goes to the Lycée Français de New York, Lycée Français de Chicago, FASNY, Rochambeau in DC, or any other AEFE-accredited school anywhere in the world — you already know how relentless the French national curriculum can be. And you’ve probably already discovered how hard it is to find a Lycée Français tutor who genuinely knows the programme. It moves fast. It expects a level of rigor in math and writing that catches even strong students off guard.

Programme Officiel:
  •  Mathématiques (6ème through terminale, incl. spé)
  • Physique-Chimie & SVT
  • Histoire-Géographie
  • Français (literature, dissertation — not FLE)
  • Philosophie (terminale) & SES
  • Brevet (3ème) & Baccalauréat (incl. BFI)
IMMERSION & BILINGUAL

Students in French Immersion and Bilingual Programs

The idea behind immersion is great. The reality is messier. A child who’s still building their French can hit a wall once the math gets more abstract or the science vocabulary becomes specialized. They understand the concept perfectly well in English, but doing it in French slows everything down — and if nobody steps in, that gap just gets wider year after year.

Dual-Track Progress:

That’s where French immersion tutoring makes the difference. We pair your child with a tutor who works in French on whatever they’re actually covering at school. The tutor builds up the subject knowledge and the language at the same time, which is what immersion is supposed to do but can’t always pull off in a classroom of twenty-five kids.

ACADEMIC IMMERSION

Families Seeking Academic Immersion in French

Some families come to us with something different in mind. Their child might be at an English-speaking school, but they want real academic content — early numeracy and discovery activities for a child in maternelle, 1st grade math and science for a young learner, or secondary-level coursework — delivered entirely in French.

Professeur des Écoles:

You can’t do this with a regular French tutor. You need a professeur de français with an actual teaching background who can deliver grade-level content, not just translate words. We’ve built a roster for exactly this, and it’s honestly one of the things families are most surprised to find we offer.

ACADEMIC DISCIPLINES

Subjects We Tutor in French

Complete curriculum-aligned instruction delivered in French. From foundational French reading and numeracy to specialty Baccalauréat sciences and philosophy.

Early Years & Elementary (Maternelle through CM2)

We should talk about this one first, because it’s the hardest to find elsewhere. For children in maternelle through CM2 (roughly ages 3 to 10), we offer genuine academic instruction in French: early numeracy, reading readiness, math concepts, inquiry-based science — all delivered in French by tutors who come from elementary education backgrounds — the kind of professeur des écoles training you’d find in the French system.

This is not a conversation class dressed up with numbers. It’s actual curriculum-level content, taught the way it would be in a French école maternelle or école primaire. Parents often tell us they spent months searching before finding us.

Mathematics / Mathématiques

Anyone who’s watched their kid do math homework from a French school knows it looks nothing like American math. The notation is different. The methodology is different — proof-based, formal, heavy on showing every step. A well-meaning tutor who learned math in an American school is going to confuse your child more than help them.

We tutor math the way it’s taught in the French system. From basic arithmetic in primaire through functions, probability, and analysis in lycée. For families straddling both systems, we also help students prepare for the SAT or ACT without losing their footing in the French programme.

Sciences (Physique-Chimie, SVT)

French science instruction has its own vocabulary, its own lab methodology, and its own expectations for how students present their work. We cover physics, chemistry, and life sciences at every level from primaire through terminale spécialité, working directly from whatever your child is studying in class.

Rigorous lab write-ups, hypotheses & scientific French phrasing aligned to official ministerial standards.

Literature, Philosophy & Humanities

Français as a school subject (not the language — the literature), philosophie in terminale, and histoire-géographie all demand a very specific set of skills. Knowing how to structure a dissertation. How to write a commentaire composé that actually follows the form. How to build an explication de texte.

These aren’t things you pick up from being fluent. They’re academic techniques that the French system rewards, and if nobody teaches them explicitly, students lose marks they didn’t need to lose.

OFFICIAL ASSESSMENTS

Exam Preparation

Targeted mastery for national diplomas and French secondary exit exams.

DIPLÔME NATIONAL DU BREVET

Brevet des Collèges

The Brevet comes at the end of 3ème — French, math, history-geography, sciences, plus an oral. For a lot of students it’s their first real encounter with the kind of formal, timed, high-stakes assessment the French system is known for. We zero in on the areas most likely to move the needle, and we spend real time on the oral component, which students tend to brush off and then regret.

LE BACCALAURÉAT & BFI

Baccalauréat

Finding a Baccalauréat tutor who can prepare your child across multiple spécialités is not easy. There’s no way around it: the Bac is brutal. We work with students in première and terminale across all their spécialités, from the épreuves anticipées de français in première through the Grand Oral in terminale. Including Bac Français International (BFI) and SAT crossover.

Brevet or Bac coming up? Don't wait.

THE METHODOLOGY

How It Works

We begin with a short diagnostic conversation, free of charge, to establish grade level, curriculum track, and needs.

01

Matched to the Curriculum, Not Just the Language

We keep coming back to this with families because it matters so much. Speaking French and knowing the French curriculum are two completely different things. When we assign a tutor to your child, that person understands the programme — the methodology, the grading criteria, how work is supposed to be presented, the notation, all of it. They’ve actually taught or studied in the French system. That’s not a nice-to-have. It’s the whole point.

A generic French-speaking tutor who “knows math” is not going to cut it for a student at the Lycée Français. We’ve seen families try that route. It doesn’t work. Real tutoring for French school students — what francophone families call soutien scolaire — requires someone who has actually lived inside the system.

02

Online and In Person

Most of our French curriculum tutoring families end up working with us online, and the truth is, for this kind of academic work, online is often the better format. Screen-sharing for math problems, shared documents for essay feedback, no commute eating into your evening — it just works. We also schedule easily across time zones, which matters for families abroad.

In-person sessions are available in New York if that’s what you prefer.

03

Flexible Scheduling

Here’s something that trips up a lot of families: French school calendars and American school calendars are not the same. Vacations fall at different times, exam periods are different, and the workload peaks hit at different points in the year. We schedule around your child’s actual school calendar. And for families in different time zones, that’s never been a problem for us.

What Parents Say

PARENT

Pierre tutors my two sons weekly. Being a French native myself one may wonder why a tutor may be needed, but learning a language is more than speaking at home, it is also about spelling, grammar, vocabulary, which are usually learned in school. Pierre provides that level of structure to our sons, but does so in a one-on-one approach that creates much better results than the class-based after school programs we tried before. Pierre is patient, firm but kind, and tailors his approach to each child's level and learning style. He also responds well to topics that interest my sons so as to make learning more engaging.

Guillaume Goussault Parent · New York City

PARENT

Cyril works with my fourteen year old weekly. He is an excellent language teacher, and she really enjoys her lessons with him. Her knowledge of grammar and her ability to converse in French has really accelerated since she started working with him. He is very knowledgable about teaching and learning languages, as he is fluent in three very different languages. He is also very engaging, which is necessary when teaching teens or children. I most highly recommend him as a French teacher. His lessons are a very valuable investment in my child’s education. Bonus: He is also just a very nice genuine person.

Grace Wilson Parent · New York City

IMMERSION

Andrei was responsive from the very beginning and paired us with a wonderful tutor, Aude, who tailored her approach to our daughter's needs. Although our daughter has been studying French her entire life and is now 15, it was during these past six months with Elite French Tutoring that she made her biggest breakthrough in conversational French. The improvement in her confidence, fluency, and ability to express herself has been impressive.

Every student works with a tutor who knows the French curriculum at their level — not a generalist, not a language tutor repurposed for math. That expertise is what you’re paying for, and it’s why families stay with us year after year.

Common Questions

Already learn in French. If your child goes to a French school, immersion program, or bilingual setting and needs help with an academic subject — math, science, literature, whatever it is — we tutor them in that subject, in French. We're not teaching them the language. If that's what you need, have a look at our French classes for adults or French lessons for children.

Yes, and we're particular about it. There's a real difference between a native French speaker who's good at math and someone who has actually taught math in the French system. Our tutors know the programme, the grading expectations, the notation, how a dissertation is supposed to be structured, what a professeur de lycée looks for. That's the whole point of what we do.

Both. Brevet prep for 3ème — French, math, history-geo, sciences, and the oral. Bac prep for première and terminale — épreuves anticipées, the Grand Oral, every spécialité. We also work with students doing the Bac Français International (BFI).

Of course. We work online with families at AEFE schools all over the world. London, Dubai, Singapore, Dakar, wherever — the curriculum is the same, and we schedule around your time zone.

A bit. Immersion programs don't always follow the exact French national curriculum, so we adapt. We work from whatever your child is actually covering in class and build up both the subject knowledge and the language skills together. Same goal, slightly different approach.

Yes. This is actually one of the things we do best, and one of the hardest things to find elsewhere. We have tutors with early childhood and elementary backgrounds who deliver genuine academic content in French — not vocabulary games, but real numeracy, early reading, discovery activities — for children from age 3 up. Parents searching for this often tell us they looked for months before finding us.

A French tutor teaches French — grammar, conversation, exam prep. We do that too, on our other pages. Here, we're tutoring math, science, literature, philosophy, history — academic subjects — and we're doing it in French. The tutor's expertise is the subject and the curriculum, not the language.

Yes. Moving between systems is disorienting — the math notation is different, essay expectations are different, even what counts as showing your work is different. We help students bridge that gap, and we also prep students in the French system for American tests like the SAT, ACT, and APs.

It depends. Math and science, the tutor usually works through problems side by side with the student — screen-sharing online, whiteboard in person — following whatever came up in class that week. Literature and humanities, it's more about technique: how to approach a commentaire composé, how to structure an argument, how to prepare for an oral. Everything is one-to-one and shaped around what that particular student needs right now.

Private academic tutoring in French starts at $200 per hour. Pricing varies depending on the subject, the student's level, and the tutor's qualifications. Book a free 20-minute assessment and we'll talk through what your child needs, then give you a clear number.

Yes. We offer dedicated IB French tutoring with experienced tutors who know the IB curriculum inside and out, from Paper 1 and Paper 2 prep to the Individual Oral assessment.
